Campaign Chair Message

Bryce MalsbaryUnited Way of Henderson County advances the common good within our community. We create opportunities for a better life for all and give hope to those who need it. There are several basic things that everyone needs for a good life: quality education to lead to a stable job, income that can support a growing family and sustain it through retirement, and good health. Education, Income and Health are the focused initiatives through which UWHC distributes funding to our local agencies that provide programs supporting these initiatives. Last year UWHC received the highest dollar request ever for program funding and it is expected this years funding request will be even higher.

So how do we anticipate meeting the needs of our community? Certainly, we hope to retain our current donors and we hope that they consider increasing their 2011 pledge. However, we are also committed to increasing the number of households who participate in the United Way Campaign. Last year roughly 10% of Henderson County households contributed to the 2010 Campaign. Through increased marketing and more effective awareness we want to reach more families and increase participation in the 2011 campaign which will bolster support to the programs that approximately one third of our county resident population utilize. Whether it is improving the lives of families, offering healthcare services to all age groups, or improving self-sufficiency, UWHC provides funding to over 40 programs that enhance the living conditions of a significant number of our local residents.

We must not let these tough economic times deter us from improving our community and the lives of those who need our help. We must be aware that someone we know or love may not need those services today, but as circumstances change the need may be there tomorrow. So in 2011, as in past years, we thank those who have and continue to donate and we encourage more of our community to embrace the motto: GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
