The Rob and Ginger Cranford Community Service Award, sponsored by Morrow Insurance Agency, is given each year in memory of the Cranfords who were passionate about giving back to their community. This year’s Cranford Award recipients are Donna and Sandy Hastie.

The Edward C. Brisley Jr. Award is named for a beloved former Executive Director of United Way of Henderson County, and is presented for outstanding volunteer service. This year’s Brisley Award honors Pauline Carpenter.

Like many of you, I have been broken-hearted watching the news in recent weeks.

The killing of George Floyd broke open wounds across our country from years of systemic racism. The pandemic crossed a somber milestone in the United States with over 100,000 deaths.

There is so much work to be done on so many fronts, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

But, amid all the pain these past few weeks, I have also been inspired by people who continue to put good back into the world. People who are quietly stepping up to help. They are unsung heroes who are making things a little bit better.

Grants from United Way and Community Foundation’s Henderson County COVID-19 Response Fund have been supporting essential services for economically vulnerable populations during these challenging times. A weekly drive-through of free diapers and formula pick-up, mental health services for local children and youth, rent and utility assistance and weekly food deliveries to homebound seniors are just a few of the important services being funded from the COVID-19 Response Fund. The United Way and Community Foundation have announced the recipients of the second round of relief grants from the COVID-19 Response Fund.

Grants were awarded Thursday morning to nine Henderson County organizations, totaling $64,000.

This brings the awards from this special fund to $127,000 for 20 organizations since the Henderson County COVID-19 Response Fund was first established on March 20.
